There is a month to celebrate just about everything, including roller skating! This is of course one of our favorite months of celebration, and we want it to become one of yours too! This October, we will dedicate the month to sharing the fun and fitness that roller skating brings to your life!
The History of Roller Skating
In the 18th century, John Merlin invented roller skating. He showed off his newest invention at a party and got the attention of all of the guests when he crashed into an expensive, heirloom mirror. To say the least, while his invention got plenty of attention, it was attention the John wasn’t incredibly proud of. Many years later, James Plimpton turned roller skating into a popular sport! He invented the first quad-skate that modern skates are now modeled after. He also opened the very first roller skating rink in the dining room of a luxury hotel. Then, in the 1970s, roller skating become the ‘thing to do’ when roller disco became a favorite hobby. And, the 70s have not lost their influence on the skating rinks of today – that is where Michael Jackson got his start, and you will still hear his songs playing in the rink today!
